Because petro-chemical companies cannot tolerate any unplanned outages, they depend on ultra-reliable motors to run their processes. This dependence has led to the following motor standards that cover squirrel cage AC induction motors:

API®† 547
These motors are designed for use on direct-coupled, continuous-duty, and centrifugal loads such as pumps, compressors, fans and blowers. API 547 motors are also suited for use in Division 2 locations.

API®† 610
These motors are commonly used for pumps, turbines and mix flow on pipelines as well as offshore and on-shore rigs.

IEEE®† 841
These motors are used for pumps, compressors, fans, blowers and many other general-purposes, including constant-speed or inverter-duty applications.

NEMA MG 1 (the motor industry specification that defines the performance, safety, test, construction, and manufacture of AC and DC motors and generators) was recently incorporated into the API 541 4th edition and the new API 547 specifications.
